The Distractions band, in Plainwell last night, was unusual in that the audience could understand all the lyrics. Undoubtedly the result of professional microphone techniques that are absent in 80% of local bands. However ,the band was way too loud, at 79 decibels. Tolerable only by wearing earplugs or sitting a considerable distance away. This level of sound is inflicted on audiences by every rock band that I have heard. And a few non-rock bands.
Almost all rock bands put out 80-82 Db. Eighty-two decibels is the Michigan maximum legal volume for ORV mufflers. The bands with good music, mostly folk and bluegrass bands, typically put out a very loud, but bearable, 72-75 Db. The hundred musicians of the Kalamazoo…
