President Jay Miller says "I like watching the people enjoy the different groups we bring in"

Updated: Apr 29, 2020

"I attended many Plainwell Music Society Concerts prior to officially joining in 2014. I wanted to become further involved in this great community and its musical outreach which involves so many wonderful musical groups from the surrounding area."

- Jay Miller President, Plainwell Music Society

Meet Plainwell Music Society Board Member -

President Jay Miller!

Q. How long have you lived in the Plainwell Area?

A. 15 years, originally from Pueblo, CO which is about 100 miles south of Denver. I was born, raised and enlisted in the Army there.

Q. What are some things you enjoy doing around the Plainwell area?

A. I like going for walks with my dog and I enjoy wildlife photography. I have photographed  deer, turkeys, fox, coyotes.  Taffy, my dog, is also a favorite subject.

Q. What organizations are you a member or supporter of?

A.  I am the past commander and current chaplain of the Otsego American Legion. I have been with the Otsego Post for 12 years now.  Corporation President at the First Presbyterian Church in Plainwell, and also a past vice commander of the Sons of Union Veterans of the Civil War.

Q. How long have you been involved with the Plainwell Music Society?

A. About 5 years.

Q. How long have you been the President?

A. This is my 2nd year.

Q. What type of music or musicians are you looking for?

A.  The venue we present,  is for mostly groups from Southwest Michigan,  we try to keep it local with a mix of older and newer groups to give them exposure and experience. To pick groups we like, we go and watch their performances or go on Youtube and see how they could fit. Our main audience is a bit older, but we do get some younger kids, who enjoy groups like Zion Lion - they are a crowd pleaser. We try to get different types of music, like Jazz and Bluegrass, we have had accordion groups and dulcimers also. We like to get feedback from the community to see what they like or don't, most people will come to see and hear most groups because it is a way to get out, listen to FREE music and  a great way to get involved with friends in the area and enjoy music - good or bad we want the feedback. With the website going up, hopefully we have more ways to get the feedback and interact more with the community.

Q. Michigan, Michigan State, or Staying out of it?

A. Staying out of this!!!!

Q. Where did you go to college?

A. I went to the University of Southern Colorado, which is now Colorado State University at Pueblo, things change.

Q. Did you ever play any instruments?

A. Way back I took guitar lessons, I enjoy listening more than playing. I like all kinds of music, not so much into hard rock / rap, but mostly  I like the Oldies but Goodies music from the 50's and 60's.  Which I guess proves - I'm an "Oldie", but I can live with that.

Q. Do you have any favorite artists or songs?

A. Most artists of the 50's - like Paul Anka, Roy Orbison, Neil Sedaka, and Frankie Valli and the Four Seasons.

Q. What do you like most about the Plainwell Music Society Concert Series?

A. I like watching the people enjoy the different groups we bring in, watching happy people, and most people enjoy themselves, clap and sing along, that is why I think I do it, to see the people enjoy the groups.
